Why do so many transmen become gay after they start to transition?
What’s Up,
I have been taking T for a few months now, and I know a lot of trans men, and I watch you tube videos and I go to forums. This question may be difficult but I have noticed that a lot of transmen who once identified as lesbians or had just identified as a human being that dated and was only attracted to women, all of a sudden stop being attracted to women. I have noticed this pattern ALOT amongst transmen. Some times I wonder if the testosterone is altering things and preferences or if it is because they find it easier to date men because they are trans. This isn’t to get on anyone’s bad side but it is really an honest question. In so many cases transman start off straight and then a few months after they start to transition they are now gay. This is not all transmen but it happens so much and I would like to know why they have this epiphany after being on hormones or just after the start up with transitioning altogether.
Just want to know other ftm’s thoughts on this topic
It’s not a matter of “becoming” gay after they start to transition.
It’s a matter of coming into their own. Becoming who they really are.
Often times what happens is that a transman will become more comfortable in his body, and this will result in him discovering his true sexuality.
The ones who identify as lesbians prior to transition and find themselves liking men afterwards aren’t just “becoming gay”, they’re simply discovering their true sexuality.
They may have felt that “lesbian” fit more with their tendency to want to dress and act more masculine, etc (that’s just an example).. but when they are finally on the right hormone and feeling more comfortable with their bodies, they may realize that they are more attracted to men and want to be with men.. because they will no longer be being with men as the “wrong” gender.. if that makes sense?
I’ve always been into men, so I don’t have first hand experience with this, but I have had many friends who have made that discovery after having begun transitioning. Especially after being on testosterone for a while or having surgery.
They just feel more like themselves, and as themselves, they can be with who they want to be with.
Also, it’s sometimes easier to come out as a lesbian than it is to come out as trans.
When I first realized I was male, the only way I knew how to explain it to anyone was “I’m a lesbian”. It justified the way I wanted to dress. Ya know?
I never really did identify as lesbian though. I just said I was for a while so people would stop wanting to put me on that show “what not to wear” for dressing so butch! .. and so I wouldn’t have to explain “uh.. I’m stuck in the wrong body”.
